What is hybrid work and what are hybrid work models?

This concern stresses the need for robust security protocols and employee education about safe digital practices in a remote work setting. In terms of gender, there is a higher percentage of men who work from home than women. These figures suggest a gender gap in remote work, highlighting the need for more inclusive remote work policies to ensure equal opportunities. This might sound strange, but if you have meetings where some people are at the office and some are working from home, encourage everyone at the office to log in from their individual computers, rather than from one room.

Some industries still depend on paper files, and if yours is among them, there’s no getting around the hassle of hauling those files back and forth between home and the office. But if you’re able to go paperless and haven’t done so yet, now’s a great time. Buying a second laptop charger and leaving it in my laptop bag changed my life in a small but meaningful way—I no longer had to crawl under my desk to unplug or plug in my charger whenever I went to the office. I’ve spent over a decade working remotely while going into the office occasionally.

Lead Your Remote Team Away From Burnout, Not Toward It

Employees work remotely most of the time with occasional visits to coworking spaces or the office for team building, collaboration, and training. In this model, the company may not have an office space and instead relies on team members in the same area to get together when they see fit. Twitter adopted this remote-first model and will allow all employees to work from home. Extensive data across surveys indicate that most people want hybrid work arrangements hybrid work from home — that is, a mix of in-person and remote work — as we continue to move through the pandemic. For example, Microsoft’s 2021 Work Trend Index, a study of over 30,000 people in 31 countries, found that 73% of respondents desire remote work options. FlexJobs surveyed more than 2,100 people who worked remotely during the pandemic and found that 58% would leave their jobs if they weren’t able to continue working from home at least some of the time.

Within this demographic, 39% work remotely full time and 25% do so part time. This suggests that the younger workforce values the flexibility and autonomy offered by remote work, which could have implications for businesses looking to attract and retain this talent group. Implementing a hybrid work schedule can allow increased work flexibility, reduce workspace inequalities and provide co-working opportunities for remote-first employees. Co-working has always been popular in the remote work world as a way to still get occasional in-person interaction without needing to be tied to an office space.

Remote workers say that flexible hours are the top benefits of working remotely

Overall, the top reasons people want a hybrid work arrangement center on having the flexibility to manage their week while still feeling connected to their organization. These sentiments align with recent Gallup research showing that gaining work-life balance and improved personal wellbeing are top reasons people would change jobs. According to our surveys, leaders and managers prefer hybrid work — and they have considerable hesitation about employees being fully remote. Typically, leaders want to honor the flexibility that employees desire, but they are concerned about sustaining team performance and culture if team members work primarily from home, long-term. For this reason, some leaders may be tempted to restrict remote-work options going forward. The COVID-19 pandemic showed us that remote work is possible—and sometimes even preferable.

Looking forward, all signs indicate that hybrid is fast becoming a new expectation of the workforce. The next chapter of this great global work experiment will be written by how employers respond to the opportunities and challenges afforded by two years of learning to work differently. Among those six in 10, there is even less agreement about how to coordinate in-person and remote schedules, with little more than a third of that group agreeing on how to define hybrid for their organization. Additionally, Gallup explored whether employees favor a certain type of hybrid scheduling policy. We asked remote-capable employees who prefer hybrid work why they want this arrangement going forward. Before the pandemic, very few remote-capable employees worked exclusively from home (8%), while about one-third had a hybrid work arrangement.
